Child Centered

Unlike conventional classrooms, where all children are expected to focus on the teacher, our Montessori preschool program takes a different approach. The teacher carefully observes each child’s interests, tendencies, and needs. Rather than standing at the front of the room, you’ll see the teacher at your child’s level, engaged directly with her or a small group of children.

Mixed Age Classrooms

Because our Montessori preschool curriculum is individualized, your child can learn at their own pace while being part of a mixed-age classroom community. Younger children learn by observing the activities and behaviors of older peers, while older children develop self-confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility by setting an example for their younger friends.

The Gift of Choice

Your child will be introduced to a wide range of concepts and activities through individual and small-group lessons. True learning, however, happens through independent exploration—when your child chooses to engage, practice, and refine their skills on their own.

Hands-on Materials

The scientifically designed Montessori materials allow your child to learn through hands-on exploration. With continued use, they develop a concrete understanding of abstract concepts - such as mathematics—laying a strong foundation for future learning.

Group Activites

While most of the day is devoted to self-directed work, there are also opportunities for group activities and play. The teacher may gather children for songs or to share stories about cultural, scientific, or historical topics. Ample time is also provided for running, digging, exploring, and playing outdoors with friends.

One Size Does Not Fit All

Rather than following a top-down, age-based curriculum, the teacher is trained to honor your child’s unique potential, connecting them with the lesson that best matches their development at that moment. Your child is challenged according to their individual abilities, not by a generic standard.

Kindergarten Included

Montessori is a continuum of education, allowing your child to build upon experiences year after year. In the Primary classroom, your child will spend three years—including the traditional “kindergarten year”—when the seeds of learning begin to flourish. Reading and writing come alive through sounds and symbols, while numbers and the decimal system are introduced. Your child explores geometric figures and learns about the countries of our world.

By the end of the Primary program, your child leaves not only with a strong foundation of academic skills, but, even more importantly, with a love of learning—seeing it as fun, exciting, and boundless. At this stage, your child is ready to transition into the Montessori Elementary Program, for children ages 6 to 12.

“Our daughter has absolutely thrived at Coastal Sage Montessori. This program quickly built a strong academic foundation where concepts that had been difficult for her to grasp in the past are now strongly rooted within her and able to be built upon. Montessori has given her an opportunity to learn foundational concepts in a way that also relates to the world around her. Through Coastal Sage Montessori, her curiosity and excitement for learning has grown, she finds deep belonging and purpose within each school day and has been woven into a learning community that values her individual interests and giftings.”
