Montessori High School
At Coastal Sage Montessori, our high school program empowers students to think deeply, act purposefully, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. This thoughtfully designed program prepares adolescents for college, career, and community life through an integrated, experience-based approach rooted in Montessori principles.
Integrated academics
In addition to coursework, academic subjects—math, science, economics, humanities, language, and literature—are explored through real-world questions and interdisciplinary projects. Students learn to think critically, communicate clearly, and collaborate effectively while engaging in Socratic seminars, where diverse perspectives are explored with respect and intellectual rigor.
Abstraction and independence
Having moved beyond the hands-on materials of the elementary years, students now engage with abstract concepts and complex problems. Our focus is not on producing one "right" answer, but on developing a thoughtful, evidence-based process. Mastery learning supports this philosophy by allowing students to progress at their own pace and demonstrate deep understanding before moving on.
Great books & socratic discussion
Through a curated Great Books course, students participate in Socratic seminars that hone critical thinking, empathy, and articulate self-expression. These discussions lay the foundation for a lifelong love of inquiry and an appreciation for multiple points of view.
Expeditionary learning & micro-economy
Learning extends far beyond the classroom. Expeditionary learning experiences—such as field research, travel, and outdoor challenges—foster independence, resilience, and leadership. Our students also design, market, and run their own small businesses through our Micro-Economy program, gaining real-world skills in budgeting, marketing, production, and teamwork.
Creative & physical expression
Whether through art, music, or physical pursuits like camping, kayaking, surfing, or hiking, students are encouraged to challenge themselves, express their ideas creatively, and find joy in movement and collaboration.
Community engagement & internships
Rooted in Montessori’s vision of education for life, our program emphasizes responsibility to both local and global communities. Students participate in meaningful service projects, local partnerships, and internships that help them apply their learning in the wider world while building confidence and purpose.
Spiritual formation
Spiritual formation is woven into the very fabric of our high school program. Classes, outings, and conversations take place within the framework of a Christ-centered education. We walk alongside our students in their journey of faith, guiding them to know God more deeply and to discover who they are in Him. This integrated approach nurtures hearts as well as minds, shaping young people who are grounded in truth, purpose, and love.
“Both our children have excelled academically in the school as the program has really cultivated the growth of all aspects of their development even beyond academics. Socially and emotionally our kids have grown in their ability to communicate with peers, work through differences, and build their confidence as they complete tasks, they never thought were possible for them.”
